Presentation of the Department

The Institute of Geosciences was established in 1952 as Department of Geology and Mineralogy in the Faculty of Mining which was transformed in 2002 to its present form. The Institute cooperates with interdisciplinary sciences that deals with the study of the Earth, including evolution, structure, origin, environments and resource exploration.

Research activities of the Institute is currently focusing on the basic and applied geological research, which fully reflects the requirements of not only our society but also the requirements of the international community within Europe. The basic geological research aimed to study of deep structure and geodynamic evolution of the Carpathian sedimentary basins, calculation of paleostress field by paleopiezometry and Quarternaly sediments dating. Also focuses on a wide range of environmental issues associated with hydrogeological and engineering-geological factors. This area is dominated by the issue of slope deformations and other geohazards, as well as the protection of groundwater against pollution and methods of remediation of environmental accidents. Emphasis is placed on research on global change, including climate conditions or natural research paleoenvironmental reconstructions in the past.

  1. Laboratory of Luminescence dating

Laboratory for sedimentary Quarternary dating contains:

– equipment for preparing of samples (chemical treatment, drying, strainering etc.)

– dating laboratory is equipped with TL/OSL (model TL/OSL – DA -20)

  1. Laboratory of seismic engineering

– seismic apparatus Terralock Mk 8 with 24 channels

– geophones SM-4B with frequency 10Hz

– seismic hammer WSS-100

– ultrasound Material tester 543 with frequences 1 Mz, 100 kHz and 40 kHZ

Geodynamic Earth evolution

  • evolution analyses of the Western Carpathians – magmatic, metamorphic and tectonosedimentary evolution, paleomorphology, paleoenvironmental analyses
  • paleostress measuring by the method of paleopiezometry from ductile, brittle – ductile deformed rocks in the tectonically active areas for comparison to present day
