Presentation of the Department:

Institute of Earth resources is engaged in scientific research, educational and expert activities, covering a wide area of processes of acquisition, processing, utilization and preservation of Earth resources.

The focus is on extraction and processing of solid, liquid and gaseous mineral resources, geo-technologies and environmental technologies, waste treatment and recycling, economy and management of earth resources, the utilization of renewable resources and geo-tourism and mining tourism.

Research is conducted in the following areas:

  • extraction of raw materials,
  • construction and exploitation of tunnels and other underground works,
  • Petroleum Engineering,
  • rescue services, fire brigades, occupational safety and health,
  • effective technologies for treatment of raw materials,
  • treatment and recycling of very fine-grained materials with high surface area,
  • utilization of renewable energy resources,
  • designing of new, development and improvement of existing technologies for the utilization of renewable energy resources,
  • development of technologies for reducing operating costs in the supply of thermal and electrical energy,
  • economic and social aspects of extracting and processing of Earth resources in the selected region,
  • geo-tourism and mining heritage.

 

List of available research equipment for cooperation

The equipment of the Institute:

Pilot-plant hall – is equipped with effective devices for treatment (e.g. Grinding, milling) and separation (magnetic, gravity-separation, flotation, etc.) of minerals and waste as secondary raw materials.

Physics laboratory, which is equipped for various types of separation of rock samples (prepares rock samples for the quantitative determination of selected elements of the „AAS“, prepares rock samples for X-ray analysis and IR spectrometry, draws up the entire silicate analysis).

Chemical laboratory with facilities for conventional chemical analysis (hood, 2 driers, muffle furnace, distillation apparatus, centrifuge, 3 digital analytical balances with a precision of 2 and 4 tenths, and so on.).

The analytical laboratory is equipped with Atomic absorption spectrometer for the chemical analysis of approximately 20 elements (fy Perkin-Elmer, USA)

Surface characterization laboratory with equipment for the measurement of solid surfaces (apparatus for measuring the contact angle, polarizing microscope).

Surface chemical analysis laboratory – equipped with a device XPS (X-ray photo-electron spectrometer) for the surface and chemical analysis of particles.

Laboratory and research hall of geo-mechanics – used for tensile and compressive tests of rocks and building materials.

Laboratory of seismic engineering and blasting works

The multimedia laboratory B107 to identify objects of tourism and geo-tourism, processing and preparation of the presentation and promotion.

Technical laboratory LTV it’s equipped for research in renewable energies and storage of the energy

Laboratory of acquisition of earth resources – equipped with technology park model analogous to the real operation and measuring apparatus for recording the position of objects in space. Modeling apparatus allows the transformation of maps in 3D form, execution of modifications and subsequent virtualization of the object or situation.

PC technology equipped with simulation and modeling software package

Employees of the Institute are holders of several patents, and utility models.
